The Ukraine War - The White Man Loves too Wage War. Just Wondering.

Just Wondering- The Ukraine War - The White Man Loves to wage war. Dinesh Kumar Kapila

The White Man has loved and continues to love to wage war. This is a fact and no amount of grand cathedrals and artwork and platitudes can cover this up. The White Man in this case would include a geographical cum cultural area traditionally over what encompasses today Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, United Kingdom (high up in the classification- way high), Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Rumania, Turkey, Greece mainly. I think we ought to place tiny Belgium here too. Over a few hundred years they were the main nations or kingdoms at war consistently, individually or as an alliance, they just had to wage war. Consistently here implies the ability to wage war was always there, there could be prolonged periods of peace but overall they had to wage war. While simultaneously there would be a great explosion of tremendous explosion of great culture or the arts.
Then the main cultural successor of today also needs to be included. It has now moved to the pole position This is the United States of America, the USA since 1910 or so has moved to take on the leadership of the White Man, whether in science or arts or war or exploration. Then come it’s cultural brothers in arms, Canada and Australia and even New Zealand. These brothers or cousins are always ready to jump in whenever they feel the core philosophy of the White Man is at stake.
Going back to earlier centuries, the main leaders in Warfare were the Greeks and then the Romans. We of course had the Vikings up North in Europe also going about their exploration and conquests. Then later the Germanic tribes moved in and some from Eastern Europe and the Turks. If they were not waging war against each other then they were waging war against African nations and Asian nations. Simultaneously there were certainly great explorations and developments and certainly culture but at the core, the love or rather tendency for the great fight remained and has been a core philosophy and resonates within the elite which actually takes decisions. The common man has on the whole fallen in line and subscribed to the idealism or ideology dished out as the reasoning. The media also tends to play the cultural angle and the sheer need to save Western Values.
It would be wise to only acknowledge that the Arabs, post conversion to Islam, have also shown a great inclination to wage war for conversion as also to spread their culture. But then they have avoided the fig leaf of reasoning and cultural explanations, they were and even now some elements continue to be quite clear about it.
Now if we note the current war. Ukraine and Russia are closer culture wise than the other European nations. It’s an old wise observation, it’s always better to get along with a neighbour, specially a powerful neighbour, rather than incite the neighbour or show an attitude. Straight up, Can Ukraine change it’s geographic position, certainly not. They can love the USA and UK mores and culture and Subway and Zara and McDonald all they like, but they remain a neighbour of Russia. These are the hard facts. Then no matter how much the Western Media May twist it, the great game was certainly on when the then USSR was dismembered. There was an understanding which Ukraine also violated. And who caused it facilitated a revolution is always open to question. Even the raising of a rather militant militia has not been assessed dispassionately.
Now here comes in the tendency of the White Man to wage war, only here it is indirect. The only troops dying or getting wounded are from Ukraine or from Russia. The USA and its most loyal supporter- the UK, have fashioned the narrative wonderfully well. The UK, cut to size, still believes and behaves as a major super power, this only indicates it’s elite retains the cultural affinity for waging war. Here the UK, USA, France and Germany mainly are supplying the weapons and ammunition and encouraging the Ukraine to continue to wage war to the end. The cities of Ukraine are being damaged and destroyed and the nation will be pushed back decades. It will take them years to recover. Only the contractors of the USA, UK and other nations will gain once reconstruction begins, after all the war has to end one day. In fact the economic and financial underpinnings of the wars, previously and later, as such also need to be assessed.
One can understand War to push back an enemy or a blatant conquest, but here a nation was egged on to take on a much more powerful neighbour. If the calculation is that Russia will be weakened considerably for decades, it could be right, but then how would that benefit Ukraine, their citizens have to ultimately realise this, that they are ultimately pawns in the great game. Later they may set up memorials and the like, but it seems this was a war which was certainly avoidable. It is only logical that under prolonged stress, their troops will begin to buckle. How long can they wage war for months with considerable losses and destruction.
The gallantry of the troops of Ukraine is certainly to be saluted but we must acknowledge the guidance and support of the West including its high tech communication platforms and satellites. The Russians with their bumbling around and poor planning have also damaged their own reputation as a superpower.
At no stage is Russia being condoned for its actions and the war. That is a given. But it’s a much larger nation with vast reserves of oil and gas and would have done its own assessment. The fact is that in its obsession with Russia, the USA has overlooked the rise of China and its military prowess and ambitions.
Coming back to the subject, the White Man, In this case USA, UK and France have made Libya into a shambles economically and as a nation and damaged Syria similarly. These were stable nations with better economies but the West wanted their allegiance and failing that, the indirect mode of war was resorted to. What we now have is an unstable region and nothing else.
Just as an aside, the current UK Military Chief has even referred to World War Two while stating his responsibilities and commitment to the continent. This after they quit the EU. The huge hangover off the past centuries seems to weigh heavily specially in the UK.
Coming to the citizens now. It’s a fact that Covid has shaken up the world. We required a period of stability to recover as a World and to set our economy in order. Instead and perhaps to overcome the disaster in Afghanistan, the USA has encouraged the war in Ukraine and the UK jumped in most vigorously and then the rest of Europe. The high fuel prices and inflation and shortage of vital food grain or rare minerals is impacting the common citizen certainly, however they either fail to connect the events or just shrug it off as ultimately it resonates within them as already discussed. The point is the rest of the World is having to suffer economically for no fault of its own. The media narrative is such that the citizens seem to believe the burden they carry of high inflation and its consequences is worth it. Hence the cultural continuity and affinity for war or warfare is apparently ingrained and continues to be so even today. Even for a war which in this case was certainly avoidable. Do we move to a multipolar world, let us see.

  1. Dinesh ji let me say that war is not a white man's phenomenon. Its a human thing and a very Darwinian thing. I am sure you remember Darwin's "struggle for existence" and the "survival of the fittest". But that's a evolutionary perspective. From historical perspective somebody ( Will Durant, I think) has calculated that in recorded history of 3 1/2 thousand years we have had 267 years of peace. In fact the most peaceful country has been a white country, namely Sweden, which has not had a war since 1814.
Right from Assyrians to Hittites to Pharaonic Egypt to Greek-Hellenistic civilization to Persians to Turks to Mongols to Chinese (to name a few)....human history is a study in violence.
Historian Arnold Toynbee gives his response and challenge thesis where a society or people face a challenge of some sort and they effectively overcome that and that's how civilizations arise. Then the same momentum leads to creative arts and esthetics.
Will Durant is his epic "Story of Civilization" mentions that a barbaric and crude and warlike people/tribe /society chance upon a flourishing, peaceful civilization and overcome it with brute force. Then they in turn settle in and soak of the creative attributes of the conquered people and become soft and complacent and in due time are conquered themselves by some other violent people.
Now coming back to recent Russian aggression; the ideological basis is the Primakov doctrine i.e. unipolar world is more unstable than multipolar one and that Russia must regain its influence in Eastern Europe and central Asia as well as middle East. Hence the dense Russian involvement in the recent Syrian war as well. These are well thought out geopolitical and geostrategic issue....however things can go horribly off the script as such situations are inherently unstable.
So its an ongoing cyclic process. Rest there is more I want to say

The Forgotten Unsung Heroes of the Battle of Madhumati. 1971. Bangladesh. 45 Cavalry.

The Forgotten Unsung Heroes of the Battle of Madhumati. 1971. Bangladesh. 45 Cavalry. By Dinesh K Kapila  (Chief General Manager (Retd). NABARD (As discussed with Major General (then Major) Pramod   Kumar Batra, Retd and Other Veterans)   Just a Glimpse – Cdr 62 Mountain Brigade – “Pramod, I believe it is hard to maneuver PT 76 tanks in this terrain and waters”. Pat is the answer, “it is hard and I may struggle, but you will never see me to give up or fai”l. They stood together, on the edge of the swift flowing Madhumati, the staff and soldiers waiting. It was dark. Very Dark. After waiting for some time the Bde Cdr had said, “lets go”. Major PK Batra vividly recollects even now watching the Cdr's face as he looked at the map with a torch. He was calm and very quiet, showing ,no fear or afraid and maintaining a dignified silence. He remembered the old saying, "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown". It was a moment in not only the life of the Brigade Co...

This Obsession with death and staying as a memory

This Obsession with death and staying as a memory Dinesh K Kapila I watch quite a few channels dealing with religion or spirituality in the morning hours. Have to. Suitably trained by wifey over the years !! Specially post retirement. ! Not grumbling, I do clarify ! Our viewing can cross religions and sects, no problems on that. However, something I must point out is this obsession with death, of many discourses, many a preacher or sant or priest or whatever we label them, they have to mention death and to state we need to be prepared for it. This period of life we all live is just a journey, a short journey between birth and death. Hell is a reality. Be ready. Heaven awaits us. Narak and Bhagwan Yama and Swarg. Janat. All this gets stressed or mentioned. A direct correlation is often drawn, praying and following certain pathways and in some cases even undertaking certain actions or rituals will only lead to peace and harmony and eternal freedom or Moksha, in the hereafter. So...

Wars and Compassion at Ground Zero

Wars and Compassion at Ground Zero by Dinesh K Kapila   (Note - As related By Major General PK Batra, AVSM (Retd).   45 Cavalry) General Batra and my late father, Major General Rajendra Nath, PVSM (Retd) go back a long way. Their bonds were forged in the din of bitterly fought battles in Bangladesh in 1971, where Dad Commanded 62 Mountain Brigade and then Major PK Batra commanded the A Squadron of 45 Cavalry. About these bonds I will write separately. And their battles. This story, well, it’s different. It’s from Another War. 1965. And touched my heart. It really did.   Where do I come in, well, I got connected with Major General PK Batra over the years as I deem it an honour to be connected to my father’s comrades in arms.     Wars are not only about death, bullets and blood and guts but also acts of caring and compassion. A barbed fencing or a wall can only create a superficial barrier but can not run through the hearts of people who were part of ...
