Quality of our Teachers
Just got this feedback from Private School heads operating on the borders of cities. Solid infrastructure, well kept playgrounds and logistical support. But on the borders and also some kilometres away from recognised urban areas the socio economic profile changes. But first the teachers, BA BEd and BScBEd teachers are available literally on tap. But without a holistic grounding and view and a lack of awareness and exposure. Teachers need to have this quality too. So some of these schools have hired Engineers, IT Professionals and the like. Or BA with diplomas even Food Processing but well grounded and aware. They are able to reach better and to impart knowledge inputs better. This does imply BEd colleges should wake up and rearrange their inputs. As regards students, the cultural profile is a lack of reading in their families, this impacts their ability to learn and understand. But as far as the parents are concerned, when advised to themselves read and be aware, they retort why send our children to your schools then. It’s your job. Rest repeated stories of success abroad make some secondary school students say, specially boys, don’t push us, ultimately we will migrate and drive trucks and the like in developed nations. I have personally observed the lack of reading as a culture in the North West and if it is there, then limited to religious texts or such areas. This does need improvement. But the main point, the quality of our educational sector professionals does require improvement. Just churning out qualified BEd teachers will not do. And broadly speaking as a Society we need awareness levels to increase. And of the liberal arts also, this is a must. We cannot leave it digital inputs through social media. That is again a major distraction but cannot be wished away. And the Government Schools have good infrastructure but the parents prefer private schools. Many private schools are just reasonable in infrastructure but still attract parents as the Government schools teachers are considered as not motivated enough. But I do perceive teaching a socio economic strata which is unaware is tough, and if the teaching is in English then time needs to be spent on sensitisation, on absorbing the intricacies rather than on rote learning. And Principals being given targets by some managements for enrolment, at times teachers too, is another reality., this is rather incorrect and impacts passion and enthusiasm. Many students from deprived backgrounds need extra inputs and much better quality educational inputs, they have to be taught how to relate to the subjects. Food for thought this.
